Guitar Techs that you know.

  • After a rather confusing time of trying to sort out a Half Way Sensible Tech in my area, it occured to me that we should really Pool our Resources and share info about Techs that we have used and would feel happy to recommend?

Because of a somewhat "Nomadic" past 10 years or so I have a few, but they are Scattered around, so...... Here goes.

West Sussex:  Graham Wheeler. Washington on the A22.
Graham is a Home Based Tech, though does occasionally do the odd day in "Drum and Strum" in Worthing.
Graham's work is excellent and he is a genuine All Rounder. Doesn't matter whether it is an Acoustic or Electric, he is probably one of the Best that I have had dealings with. He carries out the majority of Set Ups and Repairs for The Acoustic Guitar Centre in Brighton, working on anything from Crafters throught To Santa Cruz and Brook.

Lovely Fellow, though on first meeting one might find him somewhat dour, but this soon changes as he gets to know you.

    Suffolk:

    Andrew Guyton.  http:http://www.guytonguitars.co.uk

Andy is another superb Luthier. His Finishing has to be the best that I have ever seen!! It says much for his skills in this department that he actually does the Finishing of most of the Local High End Custom Builders.

Andy's Guitars are totally individual. Each one has unique features and Andy's own special touch.

As a person he is a great laugh, though I have to say that he is not the most reliable person in the world and does live and work very much in a Parallel Universe know as Guyton Land.;) He is a very fastidious Worker and when he actually does something it is always amazing quality. His Order Book is over flowing and I am told that the current waiting time on a Commission is around the 18 month mark.

    Repairs are quicker.....Just!!!

    Hertfordshire:

As Far as I know..... Now Retired from working at Machinehead in Hitchin, but more than worth seeking out..... Barry Palmer.

I have had several Guitars worked on by Barry and would have to say that he is probably the Best that I have ever experienced!!

    Wales:

    Kev Chilcott of "Royale Guitars".

A Superb Person who creates some of the most High Quality Guitars around.
Because of Health Issues Kev would be the First to tell you that his work can take time, but patience is MORE than Rewarded!!!

    Cambridgeshire:

    Richard Bartram:

I am about to have a Guitar Re Fretted by Richard. I have heard nothing but the highest praise of him and his work and will report back after meeting him in person.

    Amp Tech:

    Keith Gill: Peterborough.

Keith is yet another superb Guy. He is an Amp Freak and will happily talk for hours about anything and everything to do with Amps! His work is very QUICK and very competatively priced!!! I have had 2 Amps worked on by Keith and was stunned at the speed in which the jobs were done!!

    That's it for now Chaps.
I really feel that we should compile a List of Techs as it would be helpful tp people such as myself whom suddenly find themselves requiring the services of the Chaps but do not know anyone within their area?
"I am not a lunatic. I have the psychiatric report to prove it. A slender majority of the panel decided in my favour."

If you lend someone ?20 and never see that person again, it was probably well worth it.

On this list I've used Nigel Roberts, The Guitar Workshop and Howard Smith. I've also used Sheehan's in Leicester.

The quality of Nigel's work was very very good, but it did take quite a long time and he won't let an instrument go if a job's not done properly. Sheehan's quoted me one price and then charged me another and I didn't think the set up was that good. Howard was very good - I took him 3 guitars for a set up although they only needed truss rod and action to make them 100% and I had them back inside a week - did me a deal on 3 as well. The Guitar Workshop is very good, took a bit longer than I was told (but then I was quoted 24 hours, which I thought was a bit optimistic anyway) and a good price too. Out of all of them, I'd probably be most inclined to go back to The Guitar Workshop.

Originally they were based in Crowborough Kent prior to relocating to Devon. The Luthier who bought their old Business site was a Fine Chap by the name of Paul Richardson who started his own company "Fingerbone Guitars".

Paul became a really good friend over the years. Sadly we lost touch in 1990 and the last that I was ever able to find out was that he was now somewhere Up Country making Bespoke Furniture.

IF anyone ever gets any info I would dearly like to make contact again.

  • can't help much for the UK.

but if you're ever in Holland there's a chap called Axel in Noordwijk's MusicAllin who is supposed to do some good work.

but I can always recommend my good friend Maurits to give a guitar a good once-over. and that's only if I'm too lazy to do it myself.

on a more pro-front. there Nikola Adamovic of Adamovic Guitars in Haarlem, near Amsterdam. ace bloke who sold me the wood for the Zebra bass, and he builds some stellar stuff himself.

for amps there used to Ruud van Dijk in Leiden with his own shop called "The Amp Man" a man I would completely trust to give my amps a good once over. he sadly went out of business a few years back; though I reckon if you give him a ring he'll still have a look for you. he was always good for a discount deal on some solid gear and a chat. he was always working on something (or at least gave that impression!) when you went round.

know we're on this, do any of you know if Guitarzan and Bongo Bill is still going in Middlesbrough?
