  • Hi all, today I've started the next build, although most of the work will have to wait a few weeks when I'll have access to some big machines. Similar vibe as the last one with a few key differences, the most important one being double the amount of strings.
Body is slightly more compact and won't have any soundholes. The 12 string bridge I have is in the style of a hardtail Strat bridge, which I couldn't get to work with the semi look, here's hoping this alternative looks good.
Body is cherry, haven't quite decided on a top wood yet. Neck is maple, with a bit of flaming going on but certainly no uniform PRS style flame. For the fretboard I have a beautiful, streaky, piece of ebony.
Haven't quite decided on the pickups yet, I managed to get my hands on some weird old European mini-humbuckers, kinda look like Filtertrons, but sadly they are too narrow for the stringspacing. Looks like I need to go F-spaced, maybe some Jazzmaster pickups, plenty of time to decide on that.
So here's some pics of the lovely wood, got a very nice big piece of cherry, wide enough for a one-piece, with some cool sapwood on it too.

I dig sapwood, can you tell?  ;D

    And the lovely ebony board.

    Maple neck.

Updates will be few and far between for the coming weeks, hopefully they'll pick up a bit as this build progresses.

  • Been a bit quiet here lately but have finally made some more dust  ;D
Decided on a maple top, with some nice flame on there, can't wait to see it pop with some finish on it.

Since last update I've hollowed out the cherry body, joined the top, glued up the neck blank (maple/walnut veneer/maple/walnut veneer/maple), and the body is drying in the clamps as we speak, so in a few I'll have a nice cherry and maple sandwich.

    The top:

Hollowed out body, drilled out most of it with a big forstner bit and followed that with some router action:

And some new art adorning the wall  ;D

  • It?s seeing builds like this one and johns build that gives me a nice feeling!!!!   ?In a good way guys?

Just seeing the way they take the bare wood and thin layers of it. Then turn it into, what is a one off playing piece of art.

These do not need the F or the G on the head stock ----------------- They are a bespoke specials that are made just for the love of it , and it helps to be good at working the tools in a creative  way. :)

Unlike us mere mortals  ;)

  • Well, this build has been put on the backburner, my trusty old Sessionette 75 has decided to just be old now, not trusty. So I've had to put money towards a new amp instead of all the parts for this build. There are two bits of good news though. The amp i bought is pretty great sounding, a few of you will be familiar with it, the Yamaha THR10-C.
And the second bit of good news is I've picked up a project which I've had for a few years now and has been lying dorment gathering dust for at least 4 years. I put it down when i got too nervous about my woodworking abilities but have learnt enough since then to pick it up again. I am speaking of my old Weissenborn build :D
Been chipping away at it for a while now and it is actually close to the finishing stages of the build, after I take some pics I'll start a new thread as the old one is long gone of course.
