Marshall Law Resumes.

  • Been away from the forum for a while. Thought I'd reintroduce myself as I've just spent a fruitful few hours breathing life into my first proper amp. I bought it 30 years ago for ?99 from Honky Tonk music in Essex. For the past 25 years it's been neglected, living either in the attic or my dad's garden shed.

Anyway, plugged her in after replacing a few bits and bobs - no smoke, no sparks, just a lovely sound as I cranked her up. I'm a happy Man. Now to set about putting it all back together and start hunting for an old 1960a loaded with Greenbacks :)

  • Oh Fantastic news Marc. I have something I'd love to hear you playing through it and the Matamp, must get together again soon.  ;)

  • Nice!  I can't tell by looking at it - what model/wattage is that?

Do you have a cabinet for it (I mean for the amp)?
I'm back - am I the same person or just a clone of myself?

  • Hi David

    It's a 1967 JTM 50 - known as the "Black Flag".

It's a transition amp (between the original JTM45 and what became the "Plexi"). I think Marshall were just using up existing parts as they moved from the KT66 to the mighty EL34.

So this amp is basically a JTM45 with EL34 output valves and GZ34 valve rectifier (as opposed to solid state diodes which became the norm later on).

Fortunately I have the cab - most of it anyway, I lost the back panel somewhere along the line.

Unfortunately I butchered the amp in my youth so the cab doesn't have the original gold piping - when I was 17 I wanted it to look more modern! On top of that I wanted Master Volume control and the "Van Halen" tone, so I performed my interpretation of the Jose "one  wire mod" as well. Just spent a few hours undoing all of that nonsense in an attempt to return it back to original spec. I've got a way to go yet but at least I know that it works and the "precious" Power And Output transformers are functioning :)

  • That looks wicked sweet! I've been playing mine more lately. It's still a great sound, no matter what anyone says. They all want to sound like that.

  • I'll take a look for you Paul, it's been back in its case this past week but I need to open her up again to carry on with the fettling. Pretty sure it should be a Drake transformer in this era of amp, but we'll see.
