Title: Session Blues Baby - Christmas present is ordered.....
Post by: davidj on December 11, 2014, 04:30:40 PM
I am going to see how I get on with this.  It's a solid state amp and is physically identical to the Fender Blues Junior - you just get the chassis.  As a first step, I'm just going to swap the guts of my BJ for the new amp and try it at a few gigs.

If we get along and if funds permit, next year I'll get a cabinet and speaker for the Session and return the Fender innards to their rightful place and have a backup amp.

It seems we are going to be doing quite a bit of gigging in 2015 and some recording (woohoo!) and I have been messing around lately with different amps and set ups.  I'm hoping this will be the right sound/weight/format etc for the majaority of gigs.  Wish me luck, Im going in..... :)

I wish I'd ordered it in time for Christmas Rob!

I'm really looking forward to this - one of the few times I have bought kit without actually trying it, although "back in the day" my mate had a Sessionette I used to play through occasionally.

Full report to follow........

That sounds like a fun little amp. Doesn't Brew have a Sessionette or two? I remember someone have one or two, and absolutely loving it.

Brew has one, I used to have a few and I still believe to this day that Stewart Ward got it right straight off.
The blues Baby is the natural progression and is finding huge popularity with some very surprising names. But then should we be surprised? A certain Mr Clapton recorded most of one album using Session Amps, so I can't wait to hear David's reports. ;)

Couldn't resist a quick Frankenstein hookup!  The reverb is plugged into the unit in the blues junior that's lying on its front and the aux speaker output is plugged into the Marshall 1x12 bottom right.

First impressions are very favourable - easy to dial a useable range of  sweet sounds and its very quiet indeed.  The presence switch gives almost a compression effect without adding toppiness.  Will report back with further and better particulars...

I have to hold my hand up and say until your post David ,  I never heard of one , so would be gratefully if I could be enlightened about the amp/unit from you and Rob or any other member .

I must of skipped a few pages of life to not know about this ,anyway I'm sitting comfortable and ready to learn . ;D

So Johnny, Session amps were a really nicely designed and made solid state product.  Lately the man behind the brand has been producing a chassis-only amp that is a straight swop physically for a blues junior and intended to be an upgrade on the fender product.  The amp in the pictures is my Christmas present!

I have taken the fender innards out of my blues junior and put the clone in its place.

I gave it a quick blast once I'd done it and the results are great - warm and open with a sweet sounding crunch without much knob twiddling at all.

This Saturday, I am due to record a CD in a local studio with the Rhythm and Blues Orchestra.  I am 90% convinced that this is the amp I'll take.

Next step will be to acquire a cabinet, speaker and reverb tank from Award-Session once funds permit.  Then I'll put the new amp with the new bits and return the fender innards to the fender cab.

As I've been mucking about trying the new amp firstly through a Marshall cab and then through the fender speaker, I'm starting to appreciate why people say the blues junior is limited by the relatively cheap standard speaker.  Hmmmmm.........

Thanks Rob for the link .... :)

Thanks David for telling us more about the Amp , you must of been a very good boy to get that  ;D ;D ;D

hope all goes well on Saturday, if you do use the amp then its a must tell.

Looking forward to when your funds tin is full and everything gets put in its place ,then you can give us a rundown on how it sounds and reacts to drive and plectrum use.  :) :)

That's a great clip Rob - great tone and a classy player.

Meanwhile I have given the amp a good workout tonight and am very pleased indeed.  I am definitely going to use it for Saturday's session along with my Les Paul.  They are a great match.  I'll need a swampy tremolo sound for "hip shake" and a rockabilly slap back sound for "rock this town".  I tried out my Daneltro tremolo and Fender Delay pedal and both sound great.  For the rest of the album my usual recipe of a handful of grit and a pinch of reverb will do the job without needing any fx.

Happy, happy DJ! :) :)

Not out of the question Johnny........

It'd be great to include you in the get together somehow.

BTW have you spotted that Mr Tiptonamps is gigging again over your way - fancy going to see him some time?

Sounds like a good idea to go and see Trev's band . I will try and sneak Rob   ,covertly over the boarder into the Black Country ,if he's up for it .. it's a very dangerous mission but I reckon Captain Rob Manaring ,the most decorated officer in the Roman empire 😎 would be up for it :)
